In brief
Israeli forces reportedly attacked Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, destroying essential medical supplies, prompting urgent pleas from hospital staff for surgical assistance amidst a critical humanitarian crisis.
Israeli forces struck one of the last operational hospitals in besieged northern Gaza on Thursday, causing significant damage to medical supplies that had been delivered by the World Health Organization just days prior, according to Palestinian officials and media reports. The Israeli military stated it was “unaware of a strike” on the Kamal Adwan Hospital but is reviewing the situation. Troops had withdrawn from the hospital following a three-day raid in which they arrested most of the medical personnel, with reports indicating that two children died during this time, according to Gazan health authorities. The military justified its action by claiming that those detained were suspected members of Hamas, the group whose attack on southern Israel in October triggered the ongoing conflict. Israel reiterated claims that Hamas had established operations within the hospital premises. In the wake of the strike, the Gazan health ministry expressed grave concerns, reporting substantial depletion of the remaining medicines and supplies. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyah, the hospital's director, delivered an urgent message, appealing for any available surgical experts to report to Kamal Adwan to assist with pressing medical needs, particularly for children suffering from severe injuries due to ongoing violence. The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to worsen, with hospitals struggling to maintain operations amid ongoing military action.
