In brief
Widespread violence and a power vacuum in Gaza are complicating humanitarian efforts, with armed gangs taking control of vital aid supplies, worsening the already dire situation.
In the ravaged lands of southern Gaza, the scene is increasingly grim. Armed gangs have taken advantage of the turmoil and lack of governance following the Israeli bombardment and ground invasion that began after the Hamas-led attack on October 7 last year. Reports indicate that these gangs are now ambushing humanitarian aid convoys, stealing precious supplies aimed to relieve the struggling population. One such incident involved Hazem Isleem, a truck driver who recounted a harrowing experience while delivering aid. His convoy was overtaken by looters who forced him to divert to a field where they looted a substantial haul from 100 trucks filled with United Nations-provided aid. “It was terrifying,” Isleem shared, reflecting on the 13 hours he spent helplessly witnessing the theft of food meant to alleviate starvation among Palestinians. Local health officials report a staggering death toll exceeding 45,000 as ongoing assaults intensify the humanitarian crisis. Hunger has gripped the enclave, exacerbated by Israel’s strict regulations limiting aid supplies and movements. While Hamas has been significantly weakened in the area, no alternative governance has emerged in the absence of order, leading to a rise in armed groups seizing control in southern Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has declared it will no longer route aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing due to the increasing lawlessness, compounding the dire circumstances facing millions in Gaza. Aid organizations now face increasing risks in delivering much-needed assistance, intensifying fears of worsening conditions for those in desperate need.
