A driver has roused alarm on the holiday island of Oléron, off the west coast of France, after ramming his car into both pedestrians and cyclists, injuring five and critically wounding two.
The suspect, a 35-year-old local man, deliberately struck his victims before allegedly setting his car ablaze. He was later subdued with a stun gun while resisting arrest.
The distressing incident spanned between two villages, with the local mayor, Thibault Brechkoff, confirming multiple casualties. Authorities have since detained the man on suspicion of attempted murder in Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron.
The terrifying ordeal began around 08:45 AM local time and lasted for approximately 35 minutes, culminating outside a bakery. Eyewitness accounts reveal a series of chaotic events unfolding across various locations on the island.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez arrived at the scene and announced the initiation of an inquiry to establish the full facts, including the potential presence of gas cylinders in the assailant's vehicle.
Nuñez highlighted that the suspect, previously known to police for minor offenses, was not flagged for radicalization. However, moments before his arrest, he reportedly shouted Allahu Akbar ("God is greatest"). Special attention is being given by representatives from the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office, present only as observers at this point.
Among the severely injured, a 22-year-old woman and a 69-year-old cyclist have been identified, both receiving immediate medical attention. The Interior Minister also noted the psychological impact on witnesses who observed the disturbing events.
