In a scandal reminiscent of a Hollywood plot, a federal probe has revealed a sophisticated poker fraud scheme that defrauded wealthy gamblers, including celebrities and professional athletes, out of at least $7 million.
The scheme involved the use of X-ray card tables, hidden cameras, and advanced technology capable of reading opponents' cards through specially designed sunglasses and contact lenses. Victims, referred to as 'fishes', were largely unaware that they were marked targets in the elaborate operation run by organized crime.
The offensive reportedly began in 2019 and implicated over 30 individuals, including members of notorious mafia families such as the Bonnano, Gambino, and Lucchese families. Among those arrested are Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and former NBA player Damon Jones, both accused of being part of the deceitful enterprise that lured high-profile players into illegal poker games under the guise of friendly competition.
FBI officials described the operation as 'mind-boggling', stating that it thrived across major US cities, including New York, Miami, and Las Vegas. Many players were enticed to join underground games where they competed against professional athletes, believing they had a fair chance of winning.
Technical devices played a central role in the deception: X-ray tables read face-down cards, rigged chip trays relayed real-time data to off-site conspirators who communicated with players at the table using discreet signals. This allowed insiders to manipulate the game effectively, ensuring that victims lost significant amounts of money.
Prosecutors claim that the fraudulent winnings were funneled back into the criminal network, financing further organized crime activities. Arrests were made as part of a larger investigation that included allegations of NBA players involved in a separate betting scheme, where players supposedly faked injuries to influence game outcomes.
Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the operation and the criminal exploits tied to the defendants arrested. The implications of this high-stakes scandal reach far beyond the poker table, highlighting ongoing issues of integrity in sports and organized crime interventions.
