In brief
As war takes its toll on both soldiers and civilians, calls for a definitive end to hostilities are growing louder amidst increasing war fatigue among reservists.
Israel's ongoing conflict on multiple fronts has not only led to significant civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon but has also deeply affected its own populace. There is a growing sentiment of war fatigue, particularly among the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reservists. One such soldier, Noam Glukhovsky, a 33-year-old medic, expressed in an interview that the relentless nature of the war has forced him to reassess his life. With plans to resume his medical studies disrupted by 250 days of service within a year, he longs for a return to normalcy. "We can't keep doing this war for much longer," Noam remarked prior to the recent ceasefire in Lebanon. The IDF’s struggles to maintain manpower are becoming evident, as participation among reservists has flagged significantly. Following the devastating Hamas attacks on October 7, over 300,000 reservists initially responded to the call; however, current turnout has dipped to about 85%, and some units are seeing as low as 60% compliance. Brigadier General Ariel Heimann acknowledged that the longer the conflict persists, the more challenging it will be for the IDF to rely on reserves. Without these forces, which number over 465,000 in comparison to 170,000 active personnel, Israel’s military effectiveness would be jeopardized. The pressure on reservists extends beyond the battlefield into the civilian sector, affecting economic stability as well. Business owners like Shelly Lotan are feeling the effects firsthand. Her food tech start-up is struggling after relocating to escape threats from Hezbollah, all while facing staffing shortages due to military call-ups. “I cannot even hire someone else to fill this gap,” she lamented, with her husband also away serving as a reservist. While the ceasefire in Lebanon may provide temporary relief, civilians and military personnel alike express uncertainty about what lies ahead. Shelly worries that without a clear governmental strategy for terminating the conflict, the challenges they face may only multiply. Across the spectrum, from soldiers to entrepreneurs, a unified call for clarity and resolution echoes in the hearts of those wearied by the protracted war.
