In a tragic shooting incident in Shreveport, Louisiana, a man killed eight children, including seven of his own, and wounded two women, marking the deadliest shooting in the U.S. since January 2024. The violence erupted early Sunday morning in a neighborhood south of downtown, leaving local officials and community members devastated.

At a somber press conference, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux characterized the event as ‘possibly the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had.’ Mourners gathered outside the scene to pay their respects, laying flowers and lighting candles in honor of the victims.

The assailant, Shamar Elkins, 31, initially shot a woman in one location before proceeding to a second home, where seven children were shot. Reports indicate that one child was found dead on the roof after attempting to escape, while another survived after jumping off the roof and was transported to a local hospital.

Local officials described the children, aged between 3 and 11, as ‘happy and friendly.’ The police chief expressed his disbelief over the events, stating, ‘My heart is just taken aback.’

Elkins, who had a history of firearms offenses, was reportedly in the midst of separating from his wife, with whom he had four children. The separation was reportedly contentious.

The incident has left the community grappling with profound grief and questions about domestic violence, as it represents one of the most severe instances of family-related shootings in recent U.S. history.
