Virginia voters have approved a redistricting measure that could help Democrats in their bid to win control of the thinly-divided US House of Representatives in the midterm elections later this year.
The ballot measure will redraw the state's congressional map, and could allow Democrats to win as many as four House seats that are currently held by Republicans.
The state is the latest in a national redistricting arms race that began after President Donald Trump urged conservative states to re-examine voting maps to help Republicans keep the party's slim congressional majority.
The midterms, which will determine control of Congress, will take place in November. Each of these newly-drawn districts could play a crucial role in the political balance of the lower chamber.
Traditionally, the party in power often loses seats during the midterms. If Democrats succeed in wresting control of the House, it could pose a significant setback for Trump's political agenda and open the possibility for Democratic-led congressional inquiries.
In Virginia, Democrats currently hold six out of the state's 11 seats, and the updated map could enable them to secure up to 10.
Virginia just changed the trajectory of the 2026 midterms, said Democratic state House Speaker Don Scott on social media. He further stated, Virginians stepped up and leveled the playing field for the entire country.
The referendum, the costliest in Virginia's history, attracted over $80 million from various groups advocating for both sides.
Trump has weighed in on the measure, expressing concerns that a Democratic House majority would lead to disastrous outcomes, albeit declaring his uncertainty on gerrymandering's implications.
Redistricting typically occurs every decade post-census, but several states, including Texas, have pushed for mid-decade changes to gain electoral advantages.
Recent trends indicate that California has also made strides in adjusting its voting maps to benefit Democrats, while other Republican-led states are following suit with their own redistricting efforts.
