In brief
In a grim escalation of the humanitarian crisis, the brutal winter weather has claimed the lives of at least five infants in Gaza, intensifying the suffering of a population already bearing the scars of relentless conflict.
At least five babies have died from the cold in Gaza in the past week, health authorities reported, exacerbating the devastating effects of 15 months of ongoing warfare. Jumaa al-Batran, who was not even three weeks old, was one of the most recent victims, passing away in intensive care at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Tragically, his twin brother, Ali, also succumbed the following day. According to the health ministry, these losses highlight the deepening toll of winter’s chill on a region already ravaged by violence and destruction. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has spiraled into dire straits, with United Nations agencies reporting that Israeli military operations have displaced a staggering 90 percent of the population at least once since the conflict began on October 7, 2023. The death toll continues to rise, with more than 45,300 Palestinians reported killed, of which at least 17,492 are children, as per local health authorities' statistics.Tens of thousands of displaced families now reside in makeshift camps along the coastal stretch of Gaza, relying on deteriorating tents and flimsy tarps for protection against the harsh winter elements. Humanitarian groups warn that many of these shelters are inadequate, having been exposed to the weather for so long that they have become ineffective against rain and wind.Compounding the suffering, power shortages and fuel scarcity have left many without electricity or means to generate warmth. According to UNICEF spokesperson Rosalia Bollen, children struggle against cold, illness, and psychological trauma, with many still clad in summer attire. Reports indicate families scavenging for materials like plastic to burn in makeshift stoves for heat, while blankets and warm clothing remain in short supply. As the forecast warns of further plunging temperatures and impending rain, Palestinian Civil Defense has urged Gazans residing in tent encampments to take precautionary measures. Recommendations included staying warm with multiple layers, monitoring children’s body temperatures, and insulating living spaces to retain whatever heat can be generated. However, with conditions likely to worsen, the ongoing fight for survival continues to cast a shadow over Gaza’s most vulnerable population.
