In brief
In a dramatic escalation of the conflict in Sudan, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing genocide and has imposed sanctions on their leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti). This decision marks a significant stance by the US as the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate amidst ongoing violence.
The US claimed that under Hemedti’s leadership, the RSF has systematically committed atrocities against civilians, including killings of innocent men, women, and children, as well as widespread sexual violence based on ethnic identity. Blinken emphasized that these actions constitute genocide. The RSF's counterclaim suggests that the US is guilty of hypocrisy, arguing that the sanctions fail to address the complexities and underlying issues of the Sudanese crisis. The RSF has been in conflict with the Sudanese military since April 2023, leading to one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent times, with rampant food shortages affecting nearly half the population. An estimated 150,000 lives have been lost due to the ongoing struggles, prompting Blinken to condemn both warring factions as unfit to govern the nation in the future. The sanctions against Hemedti include restrictions on travel to the US for him and his family, along with the freezing of his assets. Additionally, seven RSF-affiliated companies based in the UAE have also been targeted to prevent further support for the group's violent tactics.
