In brief
Russian authorities detained a teenager suspected of planning an attack at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve after a U.S. security alert flagged the site as a credible threat. The 17‑year‑old posted TikTok images of a balaclava and a weapon and had the phone search history of terrorist content. The incident follows prior U.S. warnings and the park’s temporary closure.
Al Jazeera reported on Sunday that Russian authorities detained a teenager suspected of plotting an attack at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in Moscow after the U.S. embassy issued an alert on Saturday warning of a credible threat of a mass‑casualty event.
According to the Federal Security Service (FSB), the suspect, a Russian citizen, had posted photos on TikTok wearing a balaclava, tactical clothing and holding what looked like an automatic weapon. The teenager also shared images taken at Tsaritsyno with the caption: “I found a place.”
The FSB said it found the same clothing and accessories at the suspect’s home, and that the phone contained searches related to terrorist attacks, mass killings and a subscription to a neo‑Nazi Telegram channel. Interfax reported the FSB’s statement and highlighted the phone evidence.
The U.S. embassy in Moscow had warned that the park could be the target of a mass‑casualty event. The embassy urged residents to avoid the area and said it was coordinating with Russian authorities. The park was closed on Saturday following the warning.
"We are grateful to the American side for providing the information," the FSB said in its statement, as quoted by Interfax.
Russia’s Investigative Committee is now considering legal action against the suspect, the FSB said. Earlier in 2024, the U.S. warned Russia about potential attacks, including weeks before an ISIL‑affiliated group carried out a concert‑hall bombing that killed more than 140 people.
