A security source told Xinhua that on Tuesday, four civilians and four suspected separatist fighters were killed in a clash in Koshin village of the Menchum division in Cameroon's Northwest region.

The source said separatist fighters opened fire indiscriminately on a crowd of villagers, killing four civilians. Nearby government troops were alerted as the fighters tried to retreat.

In the ensuing engagement, government forces killed all four suspected fighters, according to the same source.

Local authorities reported that additional troops were deployed to the area to restore peace and order after the incident.

The conflict in Cameroon’s English‑speaking Northwest and Southwest regions has been ongoing since 2017, with separatists seeking to create an independent nation.

Current reports from Xinhua depict the clash as part of the broader crisis that has drawn international attention to the country’s fragile security situation.
