A 5.0‑magnitude earthquake struck the near east coast of Honshu, Japan at 20:16 GMT on Sunday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences confirmed. The event was reported by Xinhua, which noted the earthquake’s epicenter along the coastline and its shallow depth of 10 km.

The coordinates were determined to be 38.23° N latitude and 142.01° E longitude, placing the shock roughly 200 km east of the city of Mutsu and about 70 km north of the city of Iwate. The earthquake unfolded in a region where the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Plate, an area that experiences frequent seismic activity.

GFZ’s quick assessment indicated that the quake’s depth is characteristic of shallow surface‑focused events, which can produce noticeable ground shaking. Local authorities have not yet issued any advisories, and no reports of structural damage or injuries have been released to the public.

Seismologists anticipate that aftershocks of various magnitudes could follow in the coming hours. The GFZ will monitor the area closely and update its bulletin as new data become available.

While 5.0 does not typically trigger widespread alarms, residents in the affected prefectures are advised to remain cautious, check local emergency information, and follow any guidance issued by civil defence agencies.
