Vienna‑Ottawa, 7 November 2026 – Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl‑Reisinger called for stronger cooperation between the European Union and Canada at a joint press conference with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Ottawa. The meeting took place ahead of the minister’s visit to Canada and just before Austria’s forthcoming two‑year non‑permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council beginning in January 2027.

Meinl‑Reisinger said that the partnership has become a strategic necessity for safeguarding security and economic prosperity amid growing geopolitical uncertainty. She urged the EU to look beyond its borders and forge alliances with trusted partners, naming Canada as a key partner that can help strengthen Europe’s ability to act and respond to international challenges.

During the briefing, the Austrian minister highlighted the need to expand cooperation in economic, technological and security arenas, as well as to coordinate on international issues. The call came as the EU seeks broader global engagement, with Austria’s UNrole expected to increase its focus on global governance and multilateralism.
