In brief

In Abuja on Thursday, China and Nigeria signed a $30‑million grant agreement to fund small‑scale development projects across Nigeria. Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai highlighted the grant’s focus on low‑investment “small but beautiful” projects, while Nigerian Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu praised the aid as evidence of strong bilateral ties. The deal follows China’s earlier ¥200‑million grant and is part of a broader partnership sharing China’s poverty‑alleviation experience.

China and Nigeria signed a $30‑million grant agreement on Thursday, Oct. 30, in Abuja, with the purpose of funding small‑scale development projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of Nigerians. The signing took place at the Nigerian Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, according to a Xinhua report.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai spoke at the ceremony, noting that China had recently granted 200 million yuan (about $29.79 million) to support Nigeria’s economic and social development, especially through projects designed to directly benefit Nigerians. Yu said the new grant would support “small but beautiful” projects that require limited investment and deliver quick results.

Abubakar Bagudu, Nigeria’s minister of budget and economic planning, expressed deep appreciation for China’s continued support and described the newly signed agreement as evidence of strong bilateral relations and shared development objectives. Bagudu added that the Nigerian government has recorded more than 8,809 interventions at the lowest level of its economic support program.

This latest grant is part of a broader partnership that allows Nigeria to learn from China’s poverty‑alleviation strategy and accelerate its national development, the Xinhua report stated.

A Guardian article published 20 hours earlier echoed the details of the deal, reporting that China and Nigeria had signed a RMB 200 million (about $30 million) grant assistance agreement to finance local development projects. The Guardian coverage cites the same main points and confirms the agreement’s focus on grassroots projects.
