In brief

A $6.3 billion crypto heist reportedly linked to North Korea has prompted the FBI to blame the regime, while Kim Yo‑jong of North Korea denies the accusations. South Korea has convened emergency meetings to protect its bustling crypto market.

A record $6.3 billion cryptocurrency theft from Binance, believed to have been carried out by the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor, has drawn a sharp divide between U.S. investigators and Pyongyang officials.

The FBI’s investigation, highlighted in a TechCrunch article, points to state‑sponsored hackers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as the perpetrators.

Kim Yo‑jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong‑un, rebuffed the U.S. claim in a statement carried on the Korean Central News Agency’s (KCNA) website, declaring the accusations a “grave political provocation” and a sign of Washington’s hostility.

"The so‑called ‘cryptocurrency hacking case by the DPRK’ is no more than a tip of an iceberg that shows the essence of the U.S. hostile policy towards the DPRK," Kim said.

Following Kim’s remarks, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission convened emergency sessions with leading crypto exchanges to devise safeguards against further state‑sponsored cyberattacks.

Experts from chain‑analysis firm Chainalysis estimated South Korea’s cryptocurrency economy at $449 billion, making it an attractive target for Pyongyang’s lucrative cyber campaign.

While U.S. investigators remain convinced of North Korean involvement, the Korean government insists that the nation will only engage with the United States if it abandons its “hostile policy.”
