Canada’s Visa Denial to Russian Hockey Players Sparks International Backlash

Russian foreign ministry accuses Canada’s decision to bar Russian athletes of harming world hockey expertise.

In brief

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned Canada’s refusal to grant visas to Russian junior hockey players, citing the move as politically motivated and damaging to the World Championship in Canada. Canadian officials defend the decision amid a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that allowed Russian participation. The controversy underscores the clash between sports neutrality and geopolitical tensions.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned Canada’s decision to deny visas to Russian junior hockey players on December 26, 2026, warning that the move undermines the upcoming World Championship in Edmonton and Red Der.

The statement, released by the Russian foreign ministry’s media office and reported by TASS, says the Canadian action is “politically motivated” and directly harms not only the local championship but hockey worldwide.

An unrelated post on the Russian news site Izvestia echoed the sentiment, claiming that Canada’s “politicized” visa denial would “harm the World Cup and the entire world hockey”, but that report was not yet verified.

Canada’s sports ministers, migration officials and foreign affairs officials issued a joint statement supporting Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said the government would refuse visas to players on Russia’s national junior team despite a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that the International Ice Hockey Federation must allow Russian participation in the 2027 World Championships.

According to the claim, the CAS decision requires the FIG to permit Russian teams, but Carney’s decree means players cannot travel to the December 26, 2026‑January 5, 2027 tournament in Edmonton and Red Der, emptying the ice for a historically strong Russian junior squad.

The Russian juniors have won 13 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze medals at the World Junior Championships, more than any other nation, a fact Zakharova highlighted to drive the point that absence will deprive fans of top‑level play.

The dispute pits sports neutrality against geopolitical tension, with Russian officials accusing the Canadian government of undermining international sport while Canadian officials maintain diplomatic justification.
