In brief

Mongolia is on track to hit its 2026 foreign‑tourist arrival goal, with 919,104 visitors recorded so far, 91.9 % of the target, source Xinhua. The government has extended its "Years to Visit Mongolia" campaign to 2028 to sustain year‑round tourism and diversify the economy beyond mining.

According to Xinhua, Mongolia is on track to meet its 2026 target of one million foreign tourist arrivals, having welcomed 919,104 visitors to date, which translates to 91.9 % of the annual goal.

The Mongolian Tourism Organization released the figures, noting the country’s tourism sector is a key component of the government’s push to diversify an economy heavily reliant on mining exports.

In 2025, Mongolia had more than 847,000 foreign visitors, a 5‑percent increase from the previous year, the organization said. Xinhua highlighted that seasonality—long, harsh winters and a brief summer—has historically limited tourism, prompting authorities to promote year‑round travel.

To address the issue, the government has extended the "Years to Visit Mongolia" campaign through 2028, under which the aim is to attract at least one million foreign visitors annually. The extension is part of a broader effort to sustain momentum that helped the country reach over one million arrivals in 2024.

Xinhua’s report notes that the campaign’s promotion of destinations beyond the capital, Ulan Bator, is expanding visitor numbers in remote regions, a strategy that has proven effective in previous years.
