In brief
A moderately explosive eruption of Mayon Volcano on Friday prompted the evacuation of more than 1,400 residents from Albay province's permanent danger zone. A 3,000‑meter plume rose from the crater, and authorities raised the volcano's alert level from 2 to 3. The Philippine National Police has banned entry to the danger zone pending further risk assessment.
Over 1,400 residents in Albay province were evacuated after a moderately explosive eruption of Mayon Volcano on Friday, according to Xinhua.
Local officials moved people who had lived within the volcano’s 6‑km permanent danger zone to safer areas as the eruption began at around 11:53 a.m. local time.
The Philippine National Police issued a strict prohibition on entry to the permanent danger zone, warning of potential hazards and urging people to remain in evacuation centers.
The eruption produced a plume that rose 3,000 meters above the crater, as described by Xinhua, and prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to raise Mayon’s alert level from 2 to 3 on the same day.
Mayon, famed for its near‑perfect conical shape, remains one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes and has a long history of explosive eruptions that have triggered mass evacuations.
