In brief

In a verdict delivered Thursday, Russell Brand was convicted of rape and three sexual assault charges covering incidents from 1999 to 2009. Six anonymous women testified that the former comedian used his fame to exploit them, resulting in a long prison term. Brand, who has denied the allegations, was taken into custody following the ruling.

British comedian Russell Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court on 3 November 2026, prosecutors said. The charges span incidents that occurred between 1999 and 2009, when the 51‑year‑old rose from stand‑up to a Hollywood film star. Brand was taken into custody immediately after the verdict, according to court officials.

Six anonymous women testified that Brand exploited his status to sexually offend them. The case was triggered by anonymous allegations that surfaced in 2023 after a television documentary and press reports. None of the women knew each other, and all are protected by lifelong anonymity.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police said the conviction was “a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them”. A police statement quoted Furphy saying Brand had used “his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women.”

Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women, as his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement.

Prosecutors described Brand as a “ruthless” sexual predator. Judge Joel Bennathan announced that Brand would be sentenced on Monday and could face a lengthy prison term. The conviction keys onto evidence of a 2009 incident in which a victim met Brand after a gig, went to his home, and was anally raped during what she described as consensual sex. He allegedly tasked her with cleaning up afterwards. Brand was also convicted of sexual assault at a London bar in 2004, when he reportedly grabbed a woman's breasts at a party, and of another assault in 2009, according to court testimony.
