Russia struck Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Tuesday, knocking out power in dozens of regions and leaving dozens dead, Reuters reports. The assaults followed the collapse of a brief humanitarian truce and come a week before U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged Moscow to engage in serious negotiations, saying a ceasefire is still needed.

Russia launched a wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s power grid on Tuesday, cutting electricity in dozens of regions and leaving dozens of people dead, Reuters reported. The attacks killed at least 33 people when Russian forces bombed a school in Komyshuvakha, immediately adjacent to the front line, and were followed by a second strike on the same school, the outlet said.

Ukrainian officials said 289 drones had been fired and 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles were used in the assault. Up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were reported killed or injured by Moscow, and 15 vehicles and an electronic warfare station were destroyed, the Kremlin said.

In Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Moscow to engage in serious negotiations and a permanent ceasefire before the U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10‑11. Merz said the talks were the “right step” but called for an immediate end to hostilities, saying “I have not seen any sign of this so far.”

The assaults came less than two days after a brief humanitarian truce in the Russian‑controlled town of Oleshky, which had been agreed through involvement by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump. The truce’s collapse raises concerns about the future of diplomatic efforts while both sides prepare to resume negotiations.
