Veterinary officials in northeastern Bulgaria confirmed an outbreak of sheep or goat pox at a 120‑sheep farm in the village of Koriten on Saturday, 7 November 2026, as reported by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and BTA news outlet. The farm’s owner notified authorities after clinical signs appeared, prompting the arrival of veterinary teams for investigation and control.

The agency established a 5‑kilometre protection zone encompassing Koriten and surrounding villages Abrit, Aleksandria, Kapitan Dimitrovo, Poruchik Kardzhievo, and Severnyak, and a 20‑kilometre surveillance zone around the outbreak area. Within these zones, movement of sheep and goats has been banned except for animals destined for immediate slaughter under specific conditions.

Officials emphasized that the disease poses no danger to humans, but its spread could inflict considerable economic damage on livestock producers. Measures were taken to control and eradicate the disease in line with European and national legislation.

Independent source Facti.bg also reported a primary outbreak of sheep and goat pox at a livestock facility in Koriten, though its pages are temporarily unavailable. The outlet’s brief notice confirmed the presence of the disease at the same farm mentioned by BTA.
