In brief

In the Kali Senami area of Dekai district, Yahukimo Regency, soldiers seized two handguns, five rifles, and related gear after a brief exchange of gunfire with suspected OPM members. Brig. Gen. Riyanto said the capture reduced the threat to civilians and was part of a broader effort to curb separatist activity. The weapons are being examined at military headquarters.

On 7 November 2026 the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) seized seven firearms from suspected Free Papua Movement (OPM) fighters after a firefight in the Kali Senami area of the Dekai district, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, as reported by ANTARA.

The encounter began while TNI patrols approached a site believed to be a temporary OPM hideout. An exchange of gunfire occurred, after which soldiers were able to enter the location and recover the weapons.

Brig. Gen. Riyanto, the Habema Operations Commander, told ANTARA that “every firearm secured means a reduced potential threat to human safety.” He added that “soldiers must remain firm, professional, and measured in carrying out their duties, while prioritizing the protection of the public.”

The seized items comprised two handguns and five long‑barreled firearms, along with ammunition, sighting equipment, binoculars, and other gear. The specific types and condition of the firearms are still being identified by the military.

Sergeant General Riyanto said the operation was part of an ongoing effort to limit the movement of the separatist group and to safeguard civilians in the region. The weapons have been taken to the TNI headquarters for further examination.

Officials stated that the mission was aimed at ensuring residents could carry out daily activities safely, supporting a lasting peace in Papua Pegunungan.
