In brief

Singapore and Norway have launched a joint research grant worth more than $2 million each to support alternative fuels, vessel energy efficiency and green shipping digitalisation. The call—its third iteration since 2015—requires proposals to involve research institutions and industry partners from both countries and may award funding for up to four years. The initiative continues a partnership that previously supported four projects on maritime energy efficiency, emissions reduction and emerging technology.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) – Singapore and Norway have launched a joint research grant to support decarbonising international shipping, according to a joint statement from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Research Council of Norway and the Singapore Maritime Institute. The announcement was reported by Xinhua at 18:59 UTC and echoed by the Maritime and Port Authority’s media release.

The grant, the third of its kind after calls in 2015 and 2018, is aimed at developing technologies and solutions that support the decarbonisation of international shipping. It focuses on three areas: alternative fuels and energy infrastructure; vessel energy efficiency and emissions reduction; and digital green shipping operations.

Singapore will provide up to 2.7 million Singapore dollars (about 2.12 million U.S. dollars) for Singapore‑based research partners, while Norway will allocate up to 20 million Norwegian kroner (about 2.15 million U.S. dollars) for Norwegian partners. Projects may receive funding for up to four years.

Each proposal must involve research institutions and industry partners from both countries, ensuring that the outcomes can be applied in practical shipping contexts. The joint call follows a sustained partnership, with earlier rounds supporting four projects that covered maritime energy efficiency, emissions reduction and emerging technologies.

The initiative reflects continued efforts by Singapore and Norway to reduce maritime emissions and aligns with global decarbonisation targets.
